Verify Before Committing
Density and dimensional checks run first, none of which mark the piece. An unfamiliar refiner is a research question rather than a verdict.
Pieces that verify clean under a current mark get handed back with advice to keep them intact.
Authorise the Melt
A separate written authorisation is required for destruction, distinct from the receipt you signed at intake. Storing is never mistaken for melting.
Executors sign on behalf of an estate, and that signature goes into the estate file alongside the catalogue.

Two dealers had already turned the bar away because of a drill hole somebody put through it decades ago. The metal was never in question, but nobody wanted to be the one holding an object they could not verify. Recasting solved a problem that was entirely about confidence rather than content. It sold within a week of coming back to me in a current mark.
I inherited a very large single bar and needed part of its value, not all of it. Nobody could tell me how to sell a piece of something indivisible. Splitting it into standard weights meant I sold what I needed and kept the rest. Obvious in hindsight, and no other place I contacted suggested it as an option.
As executor I brought in a holding assuming everything would be melted. They verified each piece, photographed every face, and then told me one of the bars was genuine, current, and worth more untouched. Refusing part of their own job impressed me more than anything else. The written melt authorisation for the remainder is now in the estate file.
